Our magnificent Vasari d'Orsay is named after Giorgio Vasari, who was one of the most renowned artists in 16th century Italy. He was an Italian painter, architect, engineer, writer, and historian, best known for his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, considered the ideological foundation of art-historical writing, and the basis for biographies of several Renaissance artists, including Leonardo da Vinci. The Lives used each artist's biography as an entry point to understand his or her work, a technique which was unique in Vasari's time but now a commonplace art historical methodology. Vasari is truly a polymath worth celebrating. Deservingly, he enjoyed high repute and amassed a considerable fortune during his lifetime.
