The symbol has its origins in Greek mythology; Apollo was struck by an arrow, which caused him to become infatuated with Daphne, while Daphne became repulsed by all things related to love. When Daphne was tired of running she called for help from her father, who turned her into a Laurel tree. After Daphne’s transformation into a tree, Apollo pledged to protect Daphne. He adorned himself with laurel leaves and called it his special symbol.
